ABOUT TARGUM
Targum was established in 2025 with the mission of serving the Church and society to make the message of God accessible to everyone.
Based in Spain and thus reflecting the cultural, linguistic and demographic characteristics that make this country unique, our mission at Targum is to break down communication barriers through a Christian perspective and our strong commitment to human, effective and fair processes, communication and translation.
In its service of God and local churches, Targum works to make texts, documents, books, videos, and audio recordings accessible to all by breaking down the linguistic and cultural barriers associated with texts originally written in other languages, but also by refining and creating clearer and more accessible texts for readers and listeners from different cultural backgrounds and with different learning abilities.
In its service of society, Targum is fast becoming a leader in linguistic consulting and translation where cultural expressions such as films, novels, and other types of text benefit from experts in language, as well as in the Bible and theology.
Targum was the name given to the first translations of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) in history. In the 6th century BC, the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon. After 70 years of slavery in a foreign land, the people had lost their language: Hebrew. This made it impossible for them to understand the sacred books of their ancestors. Thus began the titanic task of translation and commentary of the Hebrew text into Aramaic, under the name Targum, which means translation or interpretation. The essence of the targumim (the plural of targum in the Aramaic language) was for people to understand what God wanted to tell them; the essence of Targum is the same.
Team
Tamar Arenas
With more than ten years’ experience in the translation industry, Tamar Arenas leads Targum, a project that has been underway for some time. Tamar has extensive experience as a professional in the sector, particularly as an audiovisual translator and project manager, and she has also served a number of Christian ministries providing subtitling, translation and adaptation for dubbing, as well as editorial translation and Easy Read adaptation in both Spanish and Catalan. Tamar currently collaborates closely with the Spanish Bible Society in the creation of accessible Scriptures for people with intellectual disabilities and comprehension difficulties. She is also undertaking an MA in Theology at the UEBE Faculty of Theology. One of her most noteworthy projects has been the translation and revision of the first two seasons of the popular series on the life of Jesus and his disciples— The Chosen—into Valencian for the public television channel À Punt.

Cognitive accessibility
Universal accessibility includes cognitive accessibility. Cognitive accessibility means making messages easier to understand for people who have reading comprehension difficulties due to dyslexia, age-related cognitive decline, or intellectual disability.
Cognitive accessibility is particularly relevant for the Church, so that the message of Jesus can truly reach every person. It is important for any type of text, including communications, teaching materials, novels, newsletters and legal documents, but it can also be applied to subtitles and audiodescription. We can convert any text in Spanish, Catalan or Valencian into an Easy Read format, according to the quality standards of UNE 153101 EX.
